Metro is introducing a new reusable U-Pass card this summer, along with several other updates that affect how WashU faculty, staff, and students access Metro transit and campus parking.
A Reusable Metro U-Pass
Metro’s new U-Pass card is reusable. Annual registration for employees and semester registration for students and contractors is still required to activate your access each year, but you won’t need to pick up a new card annually.
The new card also uses RFID technology. Simply tap your U-Pass at station readers to access Metro services.
Registration & Pickup
Campus and home mail delivery begins in early August.
If you need Metro access before July 20, a temporary U-Pass is available for in-person pickup, no registration required, valid through July 31, 2026.
New Security Gates at MetroLink Stations
Starting July 6, Metro will begin activating new automatic security gates and fare validators at MetroLink stations, rolling out in phases through August. Tap your U-Pass at the validator to access the platform. Visit metrostlouis.org/nextgenfare for details on the rollout and activated stations.
Parking Permit Pickup Reminder
2026–2027 annual parking permits will be available for pickup beginning July 13 at the University Services Center. If you selected mail delivery, permits will begin mailing in mid-July.
